Living as a Wiccan

How do you know if you are a witch?

This was a question that I used to ponder on. For me it was a gradual awakening. I have always been interested in spiritual paths, metaphysical things, ESP. After spending a good portion of my life searching for the path I wanted to travel I discovered European Shamanism. It is the "Old Religion", otherwise called "what used to get you burned". I liked doing the witchy stuff. For a several years, I read all I could find about Wicca, followed the rituals to the letter. Then I realized there is a point when you just do it. Rituals and casting come from your heart, the intent is more important than the actual words. You have to trust your feelings, your inner self. I don't remember the day I finally realized it was true, I'm a witch. A friend told me you don't have to have sparks flying from your fingertips to know it is true, you feel it in every thunderstorm, at every sunrise, at every full moon, you just know you are a witch.
I put together a list; these things have actually happened to me.
You finally know you are a witch when:
  1. Your BOS has spots on the pages from spilled brews.
  2. When cleaning house you have to specify. "Where is the broom? No, not THE broom, where is the one to clean the floor with?"
  3. Candle wax has dripped on your keyboard.
  4. There are more jars of strange smelling plants in your cupboards than there are cereal boxes.
  5. Friends know they can always give you candles and incense as a gift.
  6. When watching old re-runs of Bewitched, you find you side with Samantha's mother Endora.
  7. When travelling, stranger and stranger strangers tell you their problems.
  8. You find yourself making corn dollies in the checkout line at the grocery store (well, I thought about it).
  9. You ask for Halloween off, because it's a religious holiday.
  10. You start answering the phone with "Merry Meet".
(I keep seeing this bit of humor I wrote posted in email lists, forums, and otherwise passed around. I don't mind, as long as I am given credit for my work. - Lynnaea)
The great thing about our religion is you can be light hearted, have fun, enjoy yourself. Remember that the Goddess has a sense of humor. If we mess up a line in a ritual, it's OK, it's the thought that counts. Sure we try to get it right, but, don't dwell on it or be embarrassed too much if you totally loose it and stumble over the lines. Even though we laugh we are serious about our religious life. One full moon recently, I commented to my hubby that we must be more religious than most folks of the "popular religion" because we are not just observers, we plan our own services, we write the liturgy, pick out the chants, and are priest and priestess unto ourselves.
When working a spell or laying a charm, you have some artistic license. The tools, herbs, crystals, are for focus. Yes, they have some energy of their own to help you, but it the power mainly comes from your own desires. You can substitute in a pinch, just throw in what seems appropriate, and do what feels right. If the need arises and you can't get to a spell kit, just imagine you are using the tools. Like I said, "it's the thought that counts", literally. Thoughts put energy into action.
Blessed be,
Lynnaea
